Allyn Collection Murphy, a Democrat, was elected as the representative of Pennsylvania’s 11th congressional district for the seventy-eighth and seventy-ninth Congress (1943-1946). Much of his life was devoted to issues of arms control and peaceful use of nuclear power. This collection consists of letters written by Pvt. Margaret Wilson left the military after her war service and continued to work as a nurse for many years. William Richard Arnold (1881-1965) served as Chief of Chaplains, U.S. army, from 1937 to 1945; he then was consecrated Bishop of Phocaea, a position he held until his death. John Hart Caughey Collection Murphy resigned from Congress in 1946 after being nominated by President Harry S. Truman to serve as judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. As head of the Photo Branch of the USIS in Paris from 1950-1954, Martin was responsible for the dissemination of photographic material to the U.S. Embassies in Europe. They are housed in the archives at the George C. Marshall Foundation Research Library. In 1943 he started basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas and served in the First Battalion of the 318th Infantry Regiment of the 80th Division. Pierpont L. Stackpole (1875-1936) kept this diary while he was aide-de-camp to General Hunter Liggett during WW I. Stackpole gives a daily account of activities and meetings at Liggett’s headquarters in Neufchateau, Ligny-en-Barrois, and Coblenz. The collection consists of sheet music of twelve WW I era songs, including “Over There” and “There’s a Long, Long Trail”, as well as “Dear Lad O’Mine” and “Keep the Home Fires Burning”. This currently consists of digitized chapters of Barry Machado’s In Search of a Usable Past: The Marshall Plan and Postwar Reconstruction Today. The diary is a photocopy. It contains several photographs, postcards, and other paper souvenirs. The Patton material is especially rich, providing a study of the making of a motion picture from start to finish, including research, legal matters, script writing, filming, reviews, and the winning of the Academy Award. During World War II, he served in the Secretariat of Chief of Staff George C. Marshall, who decorated him with the Legion of Merit in 1945.
